Oft-derided, finger-quotes are used to indicate quotation in speech, either in the straightforward manner (i.e., to indicate one is citing another’s speech or text), or in a deprecatory manner, in both cases as with regular quotations. Nick would argue that fingerquotes are a useful addition to the repetoire of human communication, as without them we would have no convenient way of indicating citation without using whole extraneous words.
